Garmin Instinct 2: a smartwatch with unlimited solar battery

In January, Garmin introduced its new lines of Fenix ​​7 smartwatches with touchscreen and solar panels, and Epix Gen 2 with AMOLED display. Now it was the turn of the Garmin Instinct 2, a smartwatch with unlimited solar battery depending on how you use it, as we’ll explain later.

Starting with the size, Garmin Instinct 2 has a base model that is 45 mm in diameter, and the Instinct 2S model is 40 mm. On the company’s website, you can choose from 240 color combinations.


The smartwatches feature a monochrome LCD display with transflective pixel memory, which facilitates readability and extends battery life. The Instinct 2’s screen is square, 0.9 by 0.9 inches on the 45mm models, and 0.79 by 0.79 inches on the 40mm models. The resolution of 176 and 176 px.

From the Garmin Connect IQ store, users can download apps and widgets to their watch based on their training and work needs.

Garmin Instinct 2 has satellite positioning (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo), ABC sensors (Altimeter, Barometer and Compass) and thermometer. The smartwatches also carry an optical heart rate sensor and blood oxygen saturation.

The watches are connected via Bluetooth and ANT+, which allows the device to read data from other sensors (such as a chest strap heart rate monitor). You can also receive notifications from your iOS or Android phone.

Finally, the battery. The Garmin Instinct 2 Solar can have unlimited battery as long as the user spends at least 3 hours a day outdoors in conditions of 50,000 lux. As GSMArena pointed out, midday ambient light in summer can exceed 100,000 lux in the northern hemisphere. The 45mm model can work indefinitely in smartwatch mode, while the 40mm only works like this in battery saver mode.

The base model of the Garmin Instinct 2 has a starting price of US$350 (about R$1,830) on the company’s website.

Garmin even offers models aimed at specific professions and sports. The Instinct 2 Tactical Edition, for example, is designed for the military, and has Kill Switch (a function that erases all data from the smartwatch), stealth mode, compatibility with night vision goggles and more. The Instinct 2 dēzl is geared towards truck drivers, while the Surf Edition is for water sports athletes.
